From The Garden Trap - 27/06/2011

On the off-chance that anyone is reading this blog, thought I'd get the garden posts up to date. Didn't run the garden trap on Tuesday and Wednesday - slight turn-down in conditions plus I was too knackered to be getting early again. So just the Monday night catch to report, but before that I forgot to mention yesterday that I had a yeartick Borkhausenia fuscescens on the front garden on Saturday afternoon.

So, Monday night was more of the same numbers wise - actually even more moths - but sadly nothing new for the garden.

From The Garden Trap - 26/06/2011

With the KQ session on Saturday night and a couple of excellent garden nights on Sunday and Monday, there been a lot of transcribing, photographind and MapMating to do so there's a bit to catch up on.

Firstly, just to note that the KQ list is still under development! I managed to finish my part of the list earlier this evening and it is awaiting combining with Adrian's traps. I'll summarise this list once done, but from just my traps the list is already 3005 individuals of 188 species - it's going to be a bloody big list!

Sunday night was superb in the garden, and I was up at the crack of dawn on Monday to eagerly go through the traps. I wasn't disappointed either, as I picked up 2 more garden micro ticks.

Total catch 394 of 95sp.
(125W MV 194 of 64, 80W/100W actinic/tungsten combo 200 of 72)

FIRST FOR GARDEN:
0148 Nemophora degeerella 1
0435 Zelleria hepariella 1

Nemophora degeerella - a bit knackered but .....

Sadly the Zelleria hepariella managed to evade the camera when it flew up and disappeared into the mothing equivalent of the Bermuda Triangle that exists in my kitchen - over the years a fair few moths have vanished in there without trace.

New for year in garden:
0020 Ectoedemia decentella 1
0422 Argyresthia albistria 1

KQ

Not long back from the Ketton Quarry jaunt, having emptied the car of the mothing load, fridged up a few bits and freshened up a bit!

Turned out to be both a very good and a diappointing night - plenty of species diversity and good numbers with a couple of nice surprises, but a few of the expected species for this site at this time of year were no-shows. Conditions were perfect, so hard to know if the absences were due to being over already in the advanced season or being adversely affected by the hot dry spring. It's going to take a while to sort out the combined list etc.

Meanwhile, there were non-moth surprises in a couple of traps, loads of Glow-worms last night and some nice clearwing porn this morning ....

How to treat a brand new car ....

Marbled White on one trap, Ringlet in another ....

Checked the poplars this morning, just one female Hornet Moth emerged

Lots of holes and exuviae evident though

Checked later and she'd scored

Anticipation

Forecast looking good - low point at 3am will be a healthy 14C with 96% humidity, and it will be dry. It's been building up all day after a damp dull start. No sunshine; just drying out, warming up and looking good for some mega mothing. The south-westerly won't hurt.

So, an overnighter at Ketton Quarry is on the cards. The new car is fully loaded up - fair to say it's a tighter squeeze than in the old Vectra, but in fairness that's the difference between 'ridiculously capacious' and 'more than big enough'. Still, I've managed to load up the pasting table, 8 traps, 3 gennies, 7 cable reels, a sheet kit, 2 petrol cannisters, 2 choke assys for the 250W traps and the usual sleeping gear, cameras pots and bits.

Expect a big list and some goodies over the next few days.

Giant lacewing type thing

Back on the 03/06/2011 session at Charnwood Lodge, one of my traps had an odd looking giant lacewing type thing in it, just over an inch long. This is it in fact (click for giant) ....

I've subsequently learned that it is actually a Giant Lacewing (Osmylus fulvicephalus). You'd think they'd come up with a more suitable vernacular .....

From The Garden Trap - 22/06/2011

Before I give the summary from garden trapping on Wednesday night, a bit of a landmark in terms of the garden list has been reached. ish. Back on 16th Jan I was speculating on which new species might turn up in the garden, and also on whether the garden list would top 600 during 2011. Before Wednedsay night, the garden list comprised 297 Macros, 298 Micros and an additional 4 micros for gen det confirmation of the provisional ID - all of which are certainly new species for the garden. That gives a grand total of 599 species unless my mental maths needs calibrating. So, the Heart and Club will (eventually) be the 600th moth species for the garden. Hurrah. And it doesn't stop there as there is another new micro and another one for gen det as you'll see shortly.

Also worth noting that back on 16th Jan the list stood at 296 macros and 293 micros (589 species). I somewhat unscientifically suggested 25 micros and 25 macros that could potentially turn up. One of the two new macros since then was on the list (Puss Moth). But of the new micros, only one of the six definite and five TBC additions was on the list, clearly showing what a load of speculative nonsense that list was.

Anyway, here's the summary and pics for what turned out to be a very good night.

1334a Scoparia basistrigalis 2 (TBC)
2088 Heart and Club (Agrotis clavis) 1

Aethes cnicana

A putative Scoparia basistrigalis, for which there are no properly confirmed VC55 records. This stood out due to the wing shape differences - longer and narrower winged in appearance vs typical ambigualis/pyralella. Will need a gen det to confirm.

Garden Macro Tick

Nothing beats the joy of emptying the garden moth trap and finding a really smart garden macro tick. Something big and brash, colourful and rare. I say nothing; obviously there are lots of things that are more joyous and fulfilling, but not at that time of the morning on your own in the garden. Also, I say big and brash, rare and colourful. This one was more medium and dull, commonish and brown. Still, a garden macro tick all the same .....

Heart and Club - Garden Tick - Macro 298

The traps were actually very good last night, but I was late home from work and haven't got the list into MapMate yet, or the photos sorted out, so you'll have to wait.

Car

All being well, provided the lease company don't cock it all up again, I'll be driving the workhorse Vectra Estate into work and driving home in a brand new replacement.

Remarkably free of damage considering ....

Have to say that the Vectra has been a brilliant car all round; big load space, enough grunt up hills and on the motorway, excellent family car, never missed a beat - and not least a superb mothing mobile. It has been driven into places that many a 4x4 will never go, including woodland, quarries and moorland (albeit along fairly decent tracks).

Never once let me down, whether on shale, wet tracks or driving down farm lanes.

It has been packed to the rafters on many occasions, notably to carry loads of kit to Wicken Fen and Dungeness, and has made an excellent comfortable alternative to a tent on some superb overnighters.

I'm going to miss that cavernous load space ......

And so - what is coming in it's place? I have to say that I am both looking forward to the new car but also a little apprehensive.

Like this except in black - Laguna Sport Tourer GT Line

It's a lot more sporty in the styling, has much higher trim spec and more gadgets and comforts - but will it be big and manly enough to fully replace the Vectra? Time will tell.

Here's some classic car themed tunes .....
