Something Green, Something New

Warm, humid, still and overcast conditions last night should of brought an absoloute bonanza to the traps. There were a good few moths, but not exactly bulging at the sides or anywhere near the biggest catch of the year. There was a major highlight for me though, another new for the garden macro tick!

Green Arches

Okay it's not the smartest or freshest individual, but they all count. This is the 316th macro and the 676th species for the garden (as it stands, though there are a few pending confirmation, including a worn plain Argyresthia from last night, which may be A. glabratella).

So given that I've started with a noctuid, I'll use that as the excuse/theme for the page-filler shots .....

Half-arsed Garden Mothing Update (25/07 - 27/07)

Guilty! Once it all slowed down, so did I - this means that my MapMate records are a bit out of sync. I've just entered the records from the last three nights, but I've also got four generally rubbish garden lists from 11th, 18th, 21st and 23rd to enter. This means I can't quickly check what is new for the year etc. Still, I'll post the full lists anyway. The main thing to notice is that on all three nights the new 22W Synergetic / 18W CFL combo trap is both doing well and outperforming the 125W MV - excellent stuff.

Super Sugar 14/08/2009

The arcane art of sugaring!! Last night - zilch. The previous two nights, 1 or 2 moths. Tonight, by far the highest total at sugar in my garden - its the 'brown sugar' of the mothing underworld out there. My current batch is a bit runny for some reason, so it runs down the fence and pools up at the bottom. There are moths at the top on the main strips, down the fence along the runs, and on the ground at the pools. Nothing special about the mix - though I add a few drops of brandy and vanilla essence every now and then.
