The Spiders and the Flies

Another selection from the weekend - spiders swept from grass at Ketton Quarry and flies swept from umbelifers along the railway line at Whetstone ......

First up, I found this superb easy-to-ID jumping spider .....

Heliophanus flavipes

I got the microscope out for this one, a female, to check it's bits (spiders have external genitalia: palps on males and epigyne on females). I really need to sort out a way of getting photos from the microscope; I've tried before with varying success ranging from just about useable to complete pants .....

Xysticus cristatus

Both of these small picture-winged flies were new for me .....

Terellia tussilaginis Chaetorellia jaceae

Urophora sp. (cuspidata/jaceana)
