I'm late, I'm late ....

Forgot to mention at the end of yesterday's post - after dropping John off at home me and Dave had a bizzarre Lewis Carroll moment involving a pure white mammal! It took a couple of seconds for it to register - Rat? no. Stoat? no. Polecat?? nearly. Shuffling across the busy A6 between Birstall and Red Hill circle was ... a ferret. Yes - a bloody ferret! Just aswell they are absolutely crap at establishing feral populations.

Just as well they are absolutely crap at establishing feral populations... except on Shetland, where there are hundreds of the buggers!

Hadn't realised that Andy - I guess they are more like the Polecat-Ferret type (not sure if these are 'hybrids' or just ferrets marked like Polecats?). Are there any albino ferrets at large on Shetland aswell? What they need up there is a crowd of 4x4 driving red coat wearing fat in-bred country based fuckwit toffs like I saw at Eyebrook doing a 'Mink count'! Fully agree with eradicating vermin and introduced pests but there are better ways than using a pack of dogs and making a sport of it.

The ferrets I've seen (mostly squashed on the road) on Shetland are about 50-50 albino/polecat types, with a few 'in betweens'. They seem to have increased quite dramatically in recent years - hopefully they aren't having a serious effect on the ground-nesting waders etc.

Don't hold your breath! Sounds like those you've seen are the best ones - i.e. dead!
