The conditions were pretty good, warm with cloud cover at dusk though that cleared ovenight and the temps dropped from c19°C to 10°C at dawn. Apart from vehicles, the site is fairly open access so getting back at dawn and finding the traps still extant and the gennie still running was the first bonus!
As I recorded stuff from the outside of the traps, I was already getting a good feeling about the overall catch. The traps were positioned to give as wide a variety as possible with limited coverage: one in on the grassy embankment, one along the scrubby track and one alongside the pond with reeds.
The final tally was a superb 1354 of 179sp (+1 pyralid pending gen det). Some great highlights, lots of firsts for the year and most importantly lots of dots on the map - I haven't tallied it up but must be at least 100 new species for the site! Perhaps the biggest surprise was picking up another Epinotia signatana - given that we only added it to the county list the previous weekend. It can't have just been overlooked? The main foodplant is Prunus spp. (including cherry and blackthorn) and apple, and it's main habitat is hedgerows and thickets. Not exactly a limited specialist, and one that ought to be common. Maybe it will be soon!
